Love proves itself by deeds.
We offer practical assistance, with a focus in Southern Maine, especially to those who are alone and have no one to help them, and we check in on them. We assist with light housecleaning, yardwork, grocery shopping, shoveling for those who are unable to do it for themselves, even sharing a cup of tea with the lonely rather than leaving them shut-in and alone at home. We give relief to primary caregivers, allowing them to take breaks while we keep vigil at the side of people with dementia or at the bedside of those who are nearing their last breath. We offer compassionate listening and compassionate doing.
We respond to the most basic human needs all around us.
“We must not drift away from the humble works, because these are the works nobody will do. It is never too small…. even if you write a letter for a blind man, or you just go and sit and listen, or you take in the mail for him, or you visit somebody or bring a flower to somebody, small things, or wash clothes for somebody or clean the house. Very humble work – that is where you and I must be. For there are many people who can do big things. But there are very few people who will do the small things.”
